I worked in the Typing Pool at Hartley Electromotives for about six months when I was 16, or thereabouts. Along with Pat Veysey Mrs Salter, and I cannot remember the other girls name. I used the Tape Riter dictaphone to type all sorts of letters, but I mostly did estimates, although I did not understand all the jargon and engineering terms then. They were operated by a foot pedal, rather like a sewing machine and you could go back and forward if you missed a word or two. As a Junior, I also opened the Post with another junior and Mrs. Hill who was Mr. Symonds secretary. Then we took it all round the factory, that was a job that I enjoyed most. We had a brilliant works canteen across the yard, and a tea trolley came round every morning selling wonderful potato scones !!!!!
